Jessica Oreck
Jessica works in film, animation, collage, photography, and installation in order to rekindle a sense of surprise and curiosity about invisible, overlooked aspects of the everyday. Her feature films (Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo (2009), Aatsinki: The Story of Arctic Cowboys (2013), The Vanquishing of the Witch Baba Yaga (2014), and One Man Dies a Million Times (2019)) have won dozens of awards and been shown at festivals including Sundance, SXSW, and Tribeca as well playing theatrically around the world. The Criterion Collection recently hosted a retrospective of her documentary features. Jessica’s work in stop-motion animation, creating educational content for TED and other online networks (Mysteries of Vernacular (2011), In a Moment of Vision (2017), and Memoirs of Vegetation (2020)) have been used in classrooms and enjoyed by millions of viewers. Recently, Jessica has poured her efforts into curating and running a gallery/museum devoted to the minuscule, the forgotten, & the discarded — an interactive manifestation of nostalgia. Through this “museum" (called the Office of Collecting and Design), Jessica presents various associated traveling exhibits, installations, and workshops around the US.
